The Enneagram: A Compassionate Path to Self-Awareness
We’re born into the world as open, tender beings…present, trusting, and fully ourselves.
As life unfolds, our environments and experiences shape us. Without realizing it, we adapt. We develop ways of protecting ourselves, responding to the world, and staying connected. Quite early, these patterns form what we call personality.
We can think of personality like this car. We use to navigate life and to get around.
Our core essence…our soul…steps into this car to move through the world. The car is helpful. It keeps us going. We learn how to drive it really well and rely on it daily. It becomes really comfortable. All the settings are finely tuned.
Eventually, we can forget that we are more than just the car. We think our personality is the whole of us, and we forget the important essence inside.
This is where the Enneagram becomes such a compassionate and powerful tool. The Enneagram doesn’t ask us to fix or change ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with our personality. It developed for good reasons. It has served us well.
Instead, the Enneagram helps us:
Understand our personality patterns
Notice habitual reactions with compassion
Separate who we are from how we’ve learned to cope
**If you want to see this metaphor in action, I explain it in a short video on YouTube: Watch here.
Just as importantly, the Enneagram helps us gently step outside of our personality and reconnect with our deeper essence.
From this place, we gain more choice. Our personality remains an important resource, but it no longer runs the show. The usual route and patterns aren’t are only options. We can respond with greater clarity, steadiness, and self-trust.
That’s the gift of the Enneagram: deeper self-understanding, compassionate awareness, and more freedom in how we live and relate.
If you’re curious about exploring this work in a supportive, non-fixing way, I’d love to connect.
Always…I’m here for you and cheering you on! 💚 Molly
P.S. Fun fact: Amy Poehler just won an Emmy for one of my go-to feel-good podcasts, Good Hang! Why I love it: she’s a fantastic interviewer—and she’s also a HUGE Enneagram fan. 🥰
